Did You Know We:
Cut energy use- Trimmed energy use by 27 percent, despite a net increase in the number of stores
- Reduced energy consumption by more than 2.5 trillion BTUs
- Incorporated new technologies and ongoing energy management projects to net energy reductions equal to powering 481 Food Lion stores or, in other words, the same as if 39 percent of its stores used no energy.
Cutting-Edge Technology
Food Lion was one of the first companies to voluntarily commit to the EPA’s GreenChill advanced refrigeration partnership, an initiative through which companies pledge to go above and beyond regulatory requirements in protecting the ozone layer and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Being a GreenChill partner:
- Ensures all new and remodeled stores will be ozone-friendly
- Establishes an emissions inventory, which will be used to set emissions reduction targets
- Assesses the performance of advanced technologies in its stores through industry/government research initiatives
Three Food Lion stores incorporate ozone-friendly refrigeration systems, which reduce the amount of refrigerants needed to keep products cool or frozen by more than 60 percent. Food Lion has opened its first LEED-certified store in Columbia, S.C. This store also uses this technology and will bring the company’s total to four stores in its operating area.
Food Lion employs numerous technologies and initiatives to conserve energy, including:
- Demand-control systems that prioritize how energy should be used during peak times, especially during hot summer months
- Lighting technology such as LED lighting or automatic light shut-off
- Working with refrigeration vendors to increase energy efficiency in the equipment
- Annual energy awareness campaigns to increase associate knowledge of energy conservation
Food Lion is testing green generators - those that run on bio-diesel fuels such as cooking oils - at two stores to produce electricity during the hottest days of the summer when residential and commercial air conditioners are being maximized. By operating its own generators during these peak times, Food Lion helps lower the amount of electricity the utilities must make to meet demand.
