Cold & Flu Tips
At Food Lion, we want you to make the most of this wonderful time of year but also to prepare for the season ahead. Here are a few tips to help you prevent winter illnesses.
EXCERCISE
This strengthens the immune system, but be careful, excessive exercise can actually have the opposite effect.
GET PLENTY OF REST
Get Some Sleep. Stick as closely as you can to your normal bedtime routine and avoid caffeine or alcohol consumption late in the day as it can interfere with sleep. Find time to relax. Have tea with a friend, knit, play solitaire, practice meditation, treat yourself to a massage—anything as long as you find it calming.
GET A SEASONAL FLU VACCINE
Experts say it is the best way to protect against the flu. There are two types of flu vaccinations: shots and nasal sprays. Check with your doctor to see if one is more suitable for you than the other. Antibodies to the flu develop about two weeks after vaccination. Get a rotavirus vaccination for children. Rotavirus is the leading reason for severe vomiting and diarrhea among children. Children can receive a rotavirus vaccination that offers protection against this potentially serious illness. Contact your pediatrician or the Centers for Disease Control for more information.
EAT A HEALTHY DIET
Eat a diet that helps strengthen your immune system. Nutrients like the B vitamins, vitamins C and D, beta carotene and other carotenoids, zinc and selenium are essential to maintaining a healthy immune system. That translates to a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and peas, along with lean meats and poultry, fish and low-fat dairy products. A multivitamin supplement may help if you fall short in some areas, but don't depend on supplements to take the place of a healthy diet
MAKE SURE TO WASH YOUR HANDS
This simple act may substantially reduce your chances of contracting a virus this winter. Many illness-causing viruses can live on skin and other surfaces for hours and sometimes even longer. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to those around you.
