What Triggers Your Migraine?
Less than half of the people (40%) who regularly get migraines know what life events cause them. But among people who do, these are the most likely reasons for the pain:
- Stress: Work stress was most often the cause, especially after a hectic week. Migraines would appear on weekends or during a vacation.
- Food: Common culprits were chocolate, cheese, and citrus fruits.
- Irregular sleeping patterns: Too much, too little or interrupted sleep.
- Hormones: A common issue for women during menstruation.
- Bright lights, loud noise, and smoky rooms: Irritating, over-stimulation can bring on a migraine.
Researchers at the Migraine Association of Ireland who studied common migraine triggers suggest keeping a log of when these headaches begin, and look for a pattern of stimulation.
