Cereal
Look for these important words and measures on your cereal box. If the package says something else, consider trying a different cereal.
Whole: The first ingredient should describe a whole grain.
Fiber: Accept no less than 5 grams of fiber per serving.
200 calories: Keep your serving size about 200 calories or fewer.
Sodium: If you're watching sodium (salt intake), especially to control high blood pressure, don't go above 360 mg per serving.
Sugar: Less than 12 grams per serving is a sound guideline, but raisins and other dried fruits will naturally boost the sugar content.
Some winning choices from the editors of Eating Well magazine include: Quaker Essentials Oatmeal Squares; Post Grape-Nuts, Bran Flakes and Shredded Wheat n' Bran; General Mills Fiber One, Fiber One Honey Cluster; and Kashi Go Lean and Heart to Heart.
