Anaphylaxis is a rare but dangerous system-wide reaction involving difficulty breathing and other symptoms such as a drop in blood pressure.
Food allergies and associated anaphylaxis appear to be on the rise and could go undiagnosed, so be on the look out for symptoms. Always avoid food allergens when anaphylaxis is a possibility. Food causes include milk, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish and eggs. Non-food causes could include insect stings, medications and latex.
If you experience an interaction, epinephrine is the preferred treatment. It is available by prescription and is carried in an injectable pen which should be with you at all times. Check with your doctor and/or your pharmacist for more details.
