Private Label Brands - What Are They & Why Buy Them?

If you're serious about saving money every time you shop, you'll want to be on the lookout for Food Lion's private brands of food, beauty, baby, and household goods. No longer do you need to pay more for well-made food, ingredients, cleaners, office supplies, pet products, and personal care items. You may have questions about the quality of private brands, however. Learn more about how these brands have evolved to make running your household, and your life, a breeze.

Private Brand, Defined

You may already be aware of some of these terms:

  • Private brand
  • Private label
  • Store brand
  • Own brand or own label
  • House brand
  • Retailer brand
  • Generic (a more outdated term)

All of these terms mean the same thing, according to the Private Label Manufacturers Association. You're buying products that the stores put their own names or brands on, offering shoppers a range of proprietary items they may not be able to find elsewhere.

Private Brand History

Private label goods were founded on the philosophy of offering high quality at a lower price, according to the PLMA. The private label industry began in apparel in the early 1800s, though consumers didn't have much awareness of brand identity at that time. It was in the mid-1800s that large manufacturers like Procter & Gamble and Colgate-Palmolive began promoting their branded products and packaging with advertising.

Over the years as branded and generic products began to compete, private label goods became much less expensive as a way to attract consumers. However, consumers perceived that lower-cost products meant lower quality. But today's private brands have evolved as innovative, high-quality products designed with shoppers' needs in mind, reports the PLMA.

Benefits of Buying Private Brands

The sales of store brands have substantially grown over the years as shoppers continue to find ways to save money, according to PLMA studies. There are even more significant benefits to buying store brands:

  • They meet high standards: Many store brands are actually manufactured by companies that make the biggest name-branded items. The large, national brand suppliers have the capacities in their manufacturing facilities to provide retailers their store-branded items.
  • They cost less: Store brands, including organic items, can sell for less because they aren't heavily marketed. The cost savings are then passed down to you. You might save about one-third of your grocery budget if you buy private branded items over national name brands, according to PLMA research.
  • They taste great: If you take taste tests blindfolded, you may not be able to tell the difference between name brand or store brand foods, according to taste tests conducted by Consumer Reports. You may even find that you favor a store brand over a name brand item, which can be great for your wallet.
  • They have attractive packaging: Private brands have their own unique identities when it comes to packaging versus the bland look of store brands from decades ago. Attractive and easy-to-use packaging of store brands helps you feel good about stocking these items in your home.
  • They don't require coupons: You typically will never need to use a coupon to see the cost savings on a store brand. Once in a while, you may see a store offer a coupon or a promotion on a private brand to bring awareness to the item.

Financial expert Dave Ramsey compared the cost of three meals using private label versus national name brand ingredients in his article, "How Much Can Buying Generic Brands Save You at the Grocery Store?" The savings were eye-opening. Imagine making the same delicious creamy chicken and rice casserole for $9.62 with store brand items or $17.56 with name brand ingredients.
