- Cook bacon until crisp. Reserve 2 tablespoons of drippings. Set bacon aside.
- In a large saucepan, saute chopped onion in drippings until tender.
- Stir in flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and basil.
- Gradually add broth. Bring to a boil. Boil and stir for 2 minutes.
- Add potatoes, half-and-half. Heat through, but do not boil.
- Garnish with cheese and bacon.
