Sweet, caramelized onions, gooey American cheese and buttery sourdough bread – three tasty ingredients in this delicious grilled cheese sandwich. And since this comfort food is literally grilled, it has a slightly smoky flavor that makes this sandwich even tastier. Serve for lunch with your favorite chips and fresh fruit or with a cup of tomato soup for a truly heart-warming dish.

Select ingredients:

  1. Melt 4 tablespoons of the butter in a medium sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onion, salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 25 minutes, until caramelized.
  2. Preheat the grill to medium heat.
  3. Spread half a tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of bread. With butter side down, top four slices of bread with two slices of cheese and the caramelized onions. Place a slice of cheese on top of each caramelized onion portion. Finish with the remaining slices of bread, butter side facing up, to form sandwiches.
  4. Place the sandwiches on the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until the cheese is melted and bread is golden brown.

Recipe Tip: To prepare in a sauté pan, first heat the pan to medium heat. Add the sandwiches and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown.
