Grandma Sekel was born in Slovakia and this is her Slovak nut bread recipe which our entire family delighted to see being made to enjoy during the Christmas Holidays. It was passed down from my Grandmother to my mother and to me and my sisters. I make it for our family Christmas and our family retunions. It is served warm with butter or cream cheese.

Select ingredients:

  1. For Sweet Dough: Heat milk until bubbly. Add salt, sugar, butter. Cool till lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add egg, 1 1/2 cups flour and yeast to milk mixture. Beat well, add remaining flour until dough becomes easy to handle Knead for 8 to 10 minutes. Cover and let rise where there is no draft for 1 1/2 to 2 hours..
  2. Punch down down and knead 10 - 15 times. Divide dough into three equal parts. Roll out 1/4" thick. Spoon filling onto dough and roll up.
  3. Brush edge with butter to seal and place edge side down and cookie sheet. Allow to rise again for about 35 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Cover with towel when done to keep from hardening. This recipe makes 3 small loaves.
