My grandmother, who was born in 1886, was a wonderful cook. One of our family's favorite things was her crispy oatmeal cookies. This recipe can be easily doubled.

Select ingredients:

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together shortening and sugar. Beat in egg.
  3. Place flour, soda and salt in sifter and sift into butter mixture. Add vanilla. Mix well. Stir in oatmeal.
  4. The original recipe calls for rolling the dough into logs, in wax paper, and chilling. Slice into 1/4" rounds and bake on ungreased sheet. The way I do it is to chill the dough, then form into 1" balls, and bake on parchment paper lined sheet. Baking time, about 12 minutes
