Although turkey and ham are some of the first things that come to mind when you think of Thanksgiving, the side dishes are stars of a holiday meal too. And that includes the classic green bean casserole. However, this recipe has one secret ingredient that makes it a little heartier – ham. So, as you’re picking up the traditional items to make this casserole from your local Food Lion, make sure to grab some ham steaks as well. But, if you want to keep it vegetarian and still want to try it with a little twist this year, mix in some shredded cheddar cheese for a cheesy green bean casserole.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Mix the soup, milk and pepper in a 13x9-inch baking dish. Stir in the green beans, ham, and 1 2/3 cups crispy fried onions.
- Bake for 40 minutes. Stir and top with the remaining onions.
- Bake for 5 more minutes, or until onions are golden-brown.
Recipe Tip: Sliced deli ham is a great substitute for ham steak in this recipe.
