While you’re firing up the grill for a backyard BBQ, why not throw some fruit next to those burgers and brats? Grilling thick slices of watermelon transforms this favorite summertime fruit into something altogether different and delicious.

  1. After slicing the watermelon, brush each side of the “steaks” with just enough oil to keep them from sticking to the grill grates. When your grill has preheated, place the slices over high heat, careful not to move them so grill marks get the chance to form. Cook for 5-10 minutes, depending on your grill, then flip the slices and cook another 5-10 minutes. Be sure to leave the cover open to prevent the fruit from going limp.
  2. When both sides have distinct grill marks, remove from the grill and drizzle with freshly squeezed lemon juice, sprinkle with sea salt and fresh ground pepper and enjoy warm or at room temperature.
