Iced Apple Bars

Sweet and tart apple bars frosted with a vanilla glaze. Awesome for a snack or a dessert.


Select ingredients:


  1. Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, combine apples, 1 cup sugar, nutmeg and 1½ teaspoons cinnamon. Toss to coat, set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in butter (with pastry blender or fork) until you see mostly crumbs. Place egg yolk in a measuring cup, then add milk until it reaches 1/3 cup. Pour into flour mixture (slowly). Combine and form dough into a ball.
  3. Split dough in half. Chill one half in refrigerator. Roll the other half into a thin rectangle that will fit your pan. To prevent sticking, sprinkle flour on counter surface and wrap rolling pin in plastic wrap.
  4. Press dough into 9x13 baking pan. Sprinkle crushed cereal on top. Spoon apple mixture on top.
  5. Roll refrigerated dough into a thin rectangle (the size of your pan). Place over apple mixture. Beat egg white with a fork. Brush it on top of dough. Combine 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon, then sprinkle on top. Bake 50-60 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. For glaze, combine confectioners' sugar, vanilla and remaining milk. Drizzle over pastry while warm. Cool completely, then cut into squares or rectangles.
