- Cook the bacon for about 5 minutes in a heavy pot over medium heat to render the fat. Save 2 tablespoons of fat and discard the rest.
- Saute the pepper, onion, and garlic (adding garlic last to avoid scorching) for about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the beans, and add the molasses, barbecue sauce, ketchup, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, dry & prepared mustard, apple cider vinegar, and liquid smoke. Add salt and pepper to taste. Simmer the beans, uncovered, until rich and thickly flavored, 10 to 15 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon.
- ADDITIONAL TIP : Place the prepared beans into a baking dish and bake at 350 for 30 minutes instead of cooking them on the stovetop.
